progress, of sorts

Well, at least the pencils are finished. I'm an idiot and ended up having to draw this on two separate sheets of board, so I had to tape them together while I was drawing. As a result the scan is a bit wonky, so there are lines that don't, um, line up. Should be better once I ink it, which at this rate will be in February.

and the word of the day is...neglect!

Because that's what I've been doing to the blog lately. This is half done, I still have to draw a lighthouse and some seagulls and what not. I haven't been to a beach in about 3 years so I've kind of forgotten what it looks like...

sketch o' the day 7/9

Little bit more than a sketch today. Now I just need to produce an album to go with this.

sketch o' the day 6/26

This makes me laugh. I probably shouldn't be designing fire safety logos.

sketch o' the day 6/25

Proposed bookmark for the MA DFS to issue to the kiddies. The original proposal portrayed the charred remains of two skeletons, but was swiftly rejected. Shame.

strip o' the day 6/25

Meh. I already re-drew this one once, so I didn't want to do it a third time. Still not happy with it. I think I would go with a different perspective for the first three panels, just to give it more depth. Kinda hard to give flat, white walls without some sort of angle/depth/spatial perspective/whatever. Oh well.

sketch o' the day 6/23

Preliminary mock-up for a project I'm working on. I'll be finishing/cleaning up this for the rest of the evening. With any luck, it'll appear on the cover of the Massachusetts Dept. of Fire Services quarterly magazine, published out of Stow, MA, and issued statewide!

color sampling

Work in progress. As I've been coloring, I've been working on lighting/shading as well as getting rid of a lot of the ink lines. It really transforms the picture. (Get it? Transforms!?) The top arm is just done with solid block colors and ink lines, and has more of a cartoony feel, while the bottom arm is starting to take on a bit more of an animated/3d feel. I may do away with even more of the black, it's neat to experiment with it and see how the ink lines can really just work as place holders for where the color should go, as opposed to being an essential aspect of the whole picture. Transformers always had more of a shiny/reflective look with very minimal ink work, but since I made this transformer up, I'm going to color it how I see fit. So there.

channeling my inner 5 year old

Bam. Just wait 'til I color this bad boy.

sketch o' the day 4/18

Just a silly warmup sketch today. I really need to study some anatomy as opposed to making it up as I go. Notice the sketch trails away as I get lower on the body, as I'm not quite sure how all the muscles actually fit together...but is probably mostly because I just get bored with it before I'm finished.

i miss alt-rock.

Now all we're left with is hipster dance trash. Sigh. I'm getting old.

more shreddin'

Sweet mercy, coloring with a mouse takes forever.

This is also the first, and last, time you'll ever see anyone wearing Yankees paraphernalia on this site. Apologies, all around.

progress!

That's a sweet lookin' axe.

waaaay too much mountain dew

Whew. Drew this on 8.5x11" bristol, which is smaller than I usually work, and it still took a while. It also took a while to dredge up the names and logos of every silly pop-punk/alt-rock band I used to listen to in the '90s - though I must admit it was a lot of fun. When I paint the background posters, I'll wipe out the ink and give it a bit more depth.

sketch o' the day 5/14

Don't smoke, kids. That's a tip.

warm-up sketch 5/11

As it turns out, playing piano is a bit trickier when you only have four fingers.

another silly lil' sketch

That looks an awful lot like how my paintings turn out.
